PRIZES
We are gearing up for this year's
Literary contest and awards, bigger and better than ever. Besides
cash prizes
($100 for first place, $50 for second place, $25 for third place in each category) and
publication, and author and
book feature in the Arizona Literary Magazine, as well as a PushCart nomination
for poetry, short story, and essay categories,
the winners will be officially announced and recognized during a
Literary Awards Banquet
in Phoenix, on Saturday, November 8, 2008.
The “Unpublished Novel”
first-place winner will see his/her book published
under
Five Star Publications’
Silver Plan (a $6,000
value)
with national distribution through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, and sales on
Amazon.com, B&N.com, Target.com, WalMart.com and Five Star Publications’
online store (does not include media
kit, website, or publicity). The Unpublished Novel
Winner may also choose to apply the dollar value of the Silver Plan as
credit toward upgrading their winnings to the Five Star Gold Plan.

"Fiction" and Published “Nonfiction” categories first-place winners
receives a $300

DEADLINE:
All entries
should be mailed regular mail through the U. S. Post Office. Please, no UPS,
Fedex, or special delivery. Delivery Confirmation is okay as long as it does
not require Signature Confirmation. All entries should be postmarked
no later than
July 1, and mailed to:

CRITIQUES
To request a detailed critique
of all aspects of your work, with suggestions on improving it, mark your
choice of critique on the entry form. Critiques cost extra. Add the cost of
the critique to your payment. Critiques will only be given for
unpublished works entered in the contest. You may enter the contest
without requesting a critique.

Unpublished categories:
Entries must be unpublished. All winners
automatically consign first serial rights (only) to the Arizona Authors
Association (which means we have the right to publish the entry or an excerpt once in the
Arizona Literary Magazine).
No names should figure anywhere other than on
the entry form.
Except for poems, all manuscripts must be double-spaced,
with 12 pitch characters and 1 inch margins on four sides (or centered
for poetry). Title and page numbers on each page (but no names).
Unpublished Novels must be completed
and immediately available upon request.
Three copies of each manuscript and three copies
of the synopsis must be provided for unpublished
novels.
The first prize winner in poetry,
essay, and short story categories will be entered in the PushCart competition.
Manuscripts will not be returned,
except for requested critiques
Published categories:
-
Publishing date must be 2007 or 2008, and copyright,
ISBN number and publisher must be mentioned on the copyright page.

Electronic books may be entered but only in printed
and bound format, like a professional galley or ARC(book form, spiral-bound, comb
binding or
such) and they must include copyright date, publisher information, as well
as ISBN number.

Two copies of the published book
must be provided.

Books will not be returned but
donated.
For all categories:
All winning entries will be published or the author/book
featured in the fall issue of the Arizona Literary Magazine
Entries will be accepted between January 1 and
July 1 (postmark)
You may enter several works. Send a separate entry form for each entry (photocopy
okay).
Entries will not be returned - manuscripts will
be destroyed and published books donated.
All finalists will be notified in advance.
The judges reserve the right to switch the category
for an entry if they think it more appropriate. They also reserve
the right to cancel a category if the number of entries is insufficient,
or to decide not to have a winner if the level of the best entries is not
up to their quality standards.
Any entry not conforming to the guidelines will
be disqualified without notice. There will be no refund for disqualified
entries.
To receive the
ARIZONA LITERARY MAGAZINE issue
publishing the winning entries and featuring the winners, send $10.00 per copy
to the contest coordinator. Publication date: November 8, 2008.
